Welcome

Bug-out Bag: For Dogs

As we all know, disasters or emergencies can happen when we least expect them, but our goal is to be prepared for when they do happen.

One thing we might not think is important when we are planning for the unexpected is including our pets.

The goal of this post is to give you what you need to know so you can make a bug-out bag for your dog that will have everything you will need for them.

If you have larger dogs, you can plan to have your dog carry his/her gear for you. Smaller dogs will not be able to handle the weight of the gear, but larger dogs can.

The items I discuss here are for just one dog so if you have more than one you will need to get this gear for each one.

Dog Saddle Bag or Backpack

The bag allows the dog to carry their needs and you will have more room in your own bag for the family’s needs.

The bag you choose should be durable and waterproof. You will also want to make sure the bag is designed to evenly distribute the weight on both sides. Make sure the bag is the proper size for your dog as well.

I have not found a bag of this type that I am completely satisfied with, and the market is still small for products like this so you will need to do some research to find one that will meet your dog’s needs.

Backpacker’s bowls

These are lightweight and collapsible so they can be packed in the bag and not take up much room. You will need one for food and water.

Don’t forget something to clean them with. Castile soap will work for this.

Emergency Dog Blanket

Your dog will be able to stay warm and have a place to lie.

Make sure you get one that is lightweight and can be stored in your dog’s bag

This could be considered a luxury item, but your dog will be easier to manage if comfortable.

Dog Collar and Tags

Make sure you have a spare collar and Id tags for your dog. This is just in case the one on your dog breaks or gets lost.

If your dog does not have Id tags, then go get some. This is beneficial to your dog every day because you never know what can happen. I see posts on social media almost daily about dogs that run off without collars or Id tags with them.

You can also get a GPS tracker for your dog, but this is an expensive route to go. An Id tag with your name and phone number, as well as his/her name on them will work just as well.

As an extra precaution you can also include your address if you choose.

Freeze Dried Dog Food

These are lightweight and space is considered here.

You want your dog to have enough food during an emergency so getting freeze-dried will take up less space and be easily packed.

If your dog is not used to the brand, get one that is for sensitive stomachs, so their tummy isn’t upset. Dealing with a dog with an upset stomach is not something you want to have to manage in an emergency or disaster. You already have your hand full, so don’t add to your stress.

Treats

These are good to help with obedience.

They can also be used to keep the dog’s attention on you when necessary.

Your dog’s cooperation is important during disasters and emergencies, and these will help.

Water Purification Tablets

You should have these or a filter for yourself, but you need them to give your dog clean drinking water as well.

They are small and pack away easily.

You may think your dog can handle drinking water you find, but this could upset their stomach and we have already discussed the consequences of that.

Get the tablets. They are small and don’t take up much room.

Medications

Have the medications your dog takes regularly packed away in their bag.

This includes any prescribed for medical conditions as well as heartworm prevention and flea and tick protection.

Extra Leash

You might wonder why you would need two leashes for one dog, but we never know what might happen. If the leash gets lost or even broken, you have a spare.

Make sure the leash you use as well as the backup are durable.

You never know what conditions you will find yourself in, so have one that will not easily break under extreme conditions and situations.

Conclusion

You can find everything you might need for your dog’s bug-out bag online at different retailers. I have not found one pre-made yet for dogs that are designed for them to actually carry, but I have found pre-made kits that have most of these items and more.

There will be a few items that you will have to add to a pre-made kit if you decide to go this route, but which every you decide, make sure you have everything your dog might need to survive with you.
